A leading exponent of Kathak, Manjari Chaturvedi has combined the mysticism of Sufi with classical Indian dance to create a stunning new dance form called Sufi Kathak. It blends the gestural storytelling of Kathak dance with the spinning meditation of Sufism. With her enchanting stage presence, she is known for her intense, sensitive and graceful Sufi Kathak performances across the world. She is trained in classical Kathak by Guru Pandit Arjun Mishra and furthered her art under Smt. Kalanidhi Narayan and Smt. Priyadarshini Govind.Manjari brings Punjab’s 700 year-old folklore Jugni entwined with Baba Bulle Shah and Waris Shah in Kathak to the Indian stage. She began The Courtesan Project several years ago, which is her lone effort to bring to the forefront the original Kathak dancers – the courtesans of Ustads, or tawaifs – who devotedly learnt the finer nuances of this classical dance form and saved it for the world today
